Mandarin is the main language used by government, media and education.
About 20% of the Chinese population are learning to speak English. It is predicted that by 2025 the number of English speaking Chinese will outnumber the total native English speakers of the world.

In China, a fourth-grader is expected to have memorized roughly 2000 of these characters, while a college graduate should know 4000 to 5000 characters.
