Silk : going back to ancient times silk has always been considered an exquisite fabric and no less so today. It is a natural fabric woven from the thread produced by silk worms. Silk is an unique fabric considered to be the most comfortable available, cool in summer and warm in winter.
Linen : is another ancient fabric and dates back to the early Romans. It is woven from the flax plant and is available in various grades varying from almost silk-like to hessian style. Linen is most often offered in white or ivory but is also available in an extensive coloured range.
As linen was once woven as a very fine cloth, it is often the term used when referring to manchester, but in fact it is generally not used for this purpose today. The characteristic most often associated with linen is the presence of a slub, however it is worth noting that the slub is actually a defect and are not found in the finest grade linen.
Chintz : is a lustrous plain weave cotton which gets its shin from the glaze applied during the manufacturing process. It comes in a wide range of exquisite colours which are highlighted by the lustrous finish. Chintz is available in plain and patterned designs and is widely used for curtains and upholstery both contemporary and traditional applications.
Cotton : comes from the bud of the cotton plant and is one of the most popular natural fabrics used world wide. It has such universal appeal due to its many qualities such as its strength, resilience and the extensive range of designs and colours that are available. Cotton and cotton blends are the stable of both the fashion and furnishing industries
Satin : a versatile lustrous fabric with a smooth finish. It drapes beautifully and comes in the most extensive range of exquisite colours ranging from pastels to crimson and black. Satin is widely used in the soft furnishings, fashion and night wear industries.
Brocade : has always been associated with luxury and opulence and in early times was worn as a sign of status. The 'brocade' effect is achieved by subtle contrasts in the warp and weft threads. It is available in a stunning array of colours and patterns and most commonly used in soft furnishings mainly upholstery.
Wool : a versatile textile woven from the fleece of various animals, primarily sheep. As it is such a rich resilient cloth that offers warmth and style, it is used extensively in the fashion industry. Wool is also a great solution for the manufacture of furnishings such as rugs, cushions, blankets and occasionally draperies. With modern production techniques it is now possible to achieve a staggering collection of grades and colours
Jersey : a general term used to describe man made knitted fabrics, also often referred to as polyester . This fabric has good draping qualities and comes in an infinite array of designs and colours. It is widely used in both clothing and soft furnishings.
Velvet : a luxurious soft fabric manufactured from silk, rayon, polyester or cotton and is also available in blended fibres, eg. silk/polyester. Velvet has a super soft nap and comes in an extensive palette of stunning colours. It is most widely used in plain colours but also avanable patterned. Velvet is often used to create an opulent decor
Corduroy : made from a heavy woven cotton fabric, it has plush velvet like ribs running along the weft pile. It is a durable fabric available in a good range of colours and is used in casual fashion clothing and upholstery
Suiting : a general term used when referring to fabrics suitable for jackets, coats, suits, etc. It is usually manufactured from a man made fiber such as polyester but has the appearance of wool or linen. This is an economical solution and is extensively used in the fashion industry.
